What does comfort fit mean?

A "comfort fit" ring means it is rounded on the inside. Traditionally, rings have been flat on the interior side and are referred to as "standard fit." Comfort fit rings have become popular because they are, as the name implies, more "comfortable" to wear.

To visualize the difference between standard fit and comfort fit, think of a simple straight pipe. If we cut a small section out to make a ring without any modifications, we'd have a standard fit ring on our hands. It's flat on the inner band and kind of hard to take off--your dad's generation's wedding ring. But if we could round the interior a bit so it would be thinner near the edges but maintain the same diameter (and same ring size) at the middle bulge, we could make it comfort fit.

Comfort fit rings are easier to slip on and off because they are wider at the edges. They can move over knuckles more easily. They provide more comfort to the wearer and are the only ring fit you will find at Hanover Jewelers.

Does comfort fit run big or small?

Comfort fit rings tend to "run big*" and fit a bit looser compared to standard fit rings of the same ring size because of the different inner shapes. When the interior is round (comfort fit), there's less material in contact with the finger, which means less surface area in contact with the finger, which means it will feel looser. When the interior is flat (standard fit), there is more surface area in contact with the skin and it will feel tighter. Again, this is comparing for the same size ring (same inside diameter). It's worth reiterating: the same size ring in comfort fit may not feel the same in standard fit. Comfort fit tends to feel looser.

* Note: a comfort fit ring can't really "run big" because a size is a size. The inner diameter measurement dictates the size. If it "ran big," it would just be a different size!

What's my comfort fit size?

If you already have a ring that fits and you know your ring size, check to see if the ring is standard fit or comfort fit. If it's comfort fit, you do not need to change your size (unless you're looking into a different width ring, see below). If it's standard fit, then as a general rule of thumb, we recommend you go down a half size smaller from your standard fit ring size to arrive at your comfort fit size.

I got sized at a local jeweler, so I'm fine right?

Not necessarily. Did your jeweler provide the inner diameter measurement of your size? This is the only cold, hard measurement you can trust. Once you have this, you can compare it with our ring size chart below so you know exactly what size to order.

Jewelers use different tools to measure ring size, so the result may vary. The construction of the ring sizer can also vary, causing different jewelers to measure your finger at different sizes. As if that wasn't bad enough, some jewelers use different ring size charts.

If you try on a ring, get the inner diameter measured with Vernier calipers and Vernier calipers only, do not rely on the ring size they give you or any ring sizers.

Can ring width affect size?

Yes, even the width of a ring can affect sizing. As an extreme example, consider a comfort fit ring that is 10 mm or wider. It may fit the same as a standard fit ring due to the extra area of contact between the finger and the inner band of the ring. Some customers may be just fine staying at the same size as their standard ring size in such a case.

Width, like standard/comfort fit, changes the surface area in contact with the finger, which affects how tight or loose the ring fits.

Take an example at the other extreme: 2 mm width. This is so thin, it probably doesn't matter if it's standard fit or comfort fit, the surface area is so little the difference between fits is negligible. In this case, you are also probably fine staying with your standard fit size.

Where you need to take careful consideration of width is in the 4mm, 6mm, and 8mm width range.

As you can see, there are a multitude of factors that can affect how your fit. Did you know your dominant hand has a larger ring size than your non-dominant hand? Did you know your ring feels tighter in the morning than in the evening? Getting a perfectly fitting ring is sort of like trying to hit a moving target.

Because sizing can differ so easily from jeweler to jeweler, we have provided the industry standard table that we use. If you know the inside diameter or circumference, in inches or millimeters, you should be able to determine your ring size. We guarantee that our rings will be manufactured within a variance of +/- 0.1 mm against the published measurements in our chart.
